The Shape Arts Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary (ARMB), set up in memory of sculptor Adam Reynolds to support mid-career disabled artists, is open for submissions until 27 July. This year’s successful recipient will be awarded £5,000 and a three-month residency at The New Art Gallery Walsall in January 2016.

The Bursary provides an opportunity for artists to develop ideas and practice without pressure to deliver a particular outcome such as finished or exhibition-ready work. Previous residencies have been hosted by the V&A, Camden Arts Centre and Spike Island, Bristol.

The New Art Gallery Walsall (NAGW) opened in February 2000 to national acclaim. Designed by Caruso St John Architects as an inspirational piece of architecture, the Gallery houses the renowned Garman Ryan Collection and delivers a dynamic programme of contemporary exhibitions and artists’ projects.

Through the programme, NAGW seeks to build and develop diverse audiences for contemporary art and to provide a range of opportunities for living artists.  As an art gallery of outstanding excellence, NAGW seeks to disseminate its work as widely as possible, thus drawing national and international attention to Walsall and its achievements.

The Artists’ Studio is located on the first floor of The New Art Gallery Walsall and is fully equipped with internet access, sink, fridge, kettle, radio/CD player/i-pod dock, crockery, start-up tool box, EPSON Wireless Inkjet Printer and lockable storage cupboards. Residents also have access to office and workshop facilities and reference materials and art publications housed within the Gallery’s art library.

The studio has a large picture window so the successful recipient can have an ongoing dialog with gallery visitors that pass by (there is also a handy blind, should they wish to shut them out!) Shape will be holding an ARMB interpretive exhibition from October 2015 on the build up to the next residency in the Long Gallery, situated outside the studio.

In addition to the £5,000 bursary there are a whole host of additional professional development support on offer with this year’s residency including a studio visit with Zoë Lippett, Exhibitions and Artists’ Projects Curator and other relevant gallery staff where appropriate. An external studio visit will be arranged in discussion with the artist which may be a from a Curator or arts professional who is relevant to their practice.

The gallery is extremely well equipped and the successful resident will have access to the workshop and technician support where appropriate.

Shape are open to application across artforms. The Walsall Art Gallery has a fantastic permanent collection as well as an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions which the recipient may wish to draw from during the residency. Shape are also interested in seeing how the successful recipient will engage with the gallery setting, the West midlands, and local visitors.
