Graeae's 'Reasons To Be Cheerful' raised the roof in sell-out performances at the Southbank Centre earlier this year

Graeae received the Promotion of Diversity Award at the annual TMA (Theatrical Management Association) Theatre Awards UK ceremony on Sunday 28 October 2012.

Theatre Awards UK are given to honour creative excellence and the outstanding work seen on stages throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Promotion of Diversity Award recognises what has been a landmark year for Graeae in the diverse representation of artists, audiences and participants.

This year saw the company reach new heights with a national tour of Reasons to be Cheerful and two spectacular performances of Prometheus Awakes. Artistic Director Jenny Sealey then took to the global stage as Co-Director of the London 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony (with Bradley Hemmings). This was followed by performances of The Garden and Reasons to be Cheerful as part of the Unlimited Festival at Southbank Centre. The two shows, so different in style, embodied the mood of the summer: political, beautiful, inspirational and memorable. They marked an end to an extraordinary 12 months for Graeae.

Graeae’s next show, Sequins and Snowballs, sees the return of the Rhinestone Rollers as they wheel around a winter wonderland. Join us on Saturday 15 December at The Clore Ballroom, Southbank Centre.

Chair of the Graeae Board Dawn Langley said,

‘Graeae has had a phenomenal year, from the tour of Reasons to be Cheerful to the extraordinary launch of Prometheus Awakes and our work with Jenny on the remarkable opening ceremony for the Paralympic Games, not to mention our education work and many other projects. The Board are so indebted to the work of an amazing team for taking the company to a whole new level. It is with intense pride that we thank TMA and it is very heartening to receive such recognition and will certainly strengthen our endeavour in becoming a force for change in world-class theatre.’

Graeae’s Artistic Director Jenny Sealey said,

‘We are extremely proud to have won the award for Promotion of Diversity. Artistically we have had the most extraordinarily diverse year which has enabled us to work with a huge spectrum of phenomenal people. Thank you to the TMA for recognising our work with this award’

Graeae’s Executive Director Judith Kilvington said,

‘We are thrilled to have received the TMA's Award for Promotion of Diversity. Graeae is all about creating a diversity of platforms for Deaf and disabled artists at home and internationally and in 2012 we exceeded all expectations with our productions of Reasons to be Cheerful, Prometheus Awakes and The Garden. It is great to receive recognition from our peers and to lead the way in creating a more diverse theatre ecology.’
