Dolly Sen responds to the first day of Spring - time to get busy! / 2 March 2010
Oooo, the sun came out yesterday. I feel energised and buzzing like new batteries in a vibrator. My productivity over the winter months goes down, and I don't really feel like myself. You can tell the sun did me good because I had a busy day and didn't feel like I was climbing Mount Everest. The three things I did were:
- I spoke at the launch of Mind's 'We Need To Talk' campaign to ensure people using mental health services have a choice of treatment, and that if they want psychological treatment, they can have it. I gave my 5 minute talk about how many people I knew who attempted or committed suicide whilst on the ridiculously long waiting list for psychological therapies. Nobody would dare to say to someone with a broken leg, "we can treat you in a year and a half, take the pain." It is very different when it comes to mental health. What was funny about yesterday though, was that the House of Lords has its own bottled water. Why can't they go to Asda like everyone else?
- The 2nd thing I did was front a Guardian Joe Public blog about the misconceptions around mental illness and violence. This was in response to the film shown on BBC called 'Why did you kill my dad?' which I was worried would further feed the misconception that people with mental health issues are more violent than those without.
- Lastly, I am the manager of a doggie agony aunt. Nessy Agoniaunt has her own Facebook page. If you are fed up with human advice, come try her out!
